Asphalt Testing Procedures
- Asphalt Type Determination (Based on visual evaluation)
Test Description: - Used to estimate the structural type of asphalt that is present in a core sample
- Prerequisite Testing:
- None
- Note:
- This procedure is used to determine an approximate determination of asphalt.
- Core Thickness and Density Determination
(ASTM D2041/AASHTO T209) 
Test Description: - Used to determine the thickness of each asphalt layer present in a core
- To determine the bulk density of either the entire core or core layer
- Prerequisite Testing:
- Density determination of the entire core - None
- Density determination of a specified layer of core - Core Cut
- Cut Core
Test Description: - To cut a core to a specified length. Normally performed to determine a bituminous evaluation of a particular layer.
- Prerequisite Testing:
- None
- Bituminous Evaluation: Density, Cut, Gradation, Breakdown, Asphalt Content, Specific Gravity, and Air Void Determination
(ASTM D2726, D2041, D6307, D5444, D3203/AASHTO T166, T209, T308, T30, T269) 
Test Description: - To determine the various characteristics of asphalt. These characteristics can be used to evaluate the quality of asphalt that was installed in the field.
- Commonly performed in Verification Testing (VT) for state and local governments.
- Prerequisite Testing:
- None
- Bituminous Aggregate Gradation
Test Description: - To determine the gradation of aggregate used in a bituminous mixture.
- Prerequisite Testing:
- If aggregate is free of asphaltic binder - None
- If in core form (post-construction) - Core breakdown, Core Cut, Asphalt Content.
- If in aggregate form (pre-construction) - Asphalt Content
- Asphalt Content Determination
(ASTM D6307/AASHTO T308) 
Test Description: - To determine the percent of asphalt binder that is present in a bituminous sample.
- Prerequisite Testing:
- If in core form (post-construction) - Core breakdown, Core Cut
- If in aggregate form (pre-construction) - None
- Specific Gravity and Air Voids
(ASTM D2041, D3203/AASHTO T209, T269) 
Test Description: - To determine the theoretical maximum specific gravity and percent air voids of a bituminous sample.
- Prerequisite Testing:
- If in core form (post-construction) - Core breakdown, Core Cut
- If in aggregate form (pre-construction) - None
